Indiana Democratic Party 3-11-17 Weekly Radio Address

Chairman John Zody and the Indiana Democratic Party weekly radio address:

“Lovingly dubbed TrumpCare, it’s clear that ensuring Americans and Hoosiers remain covered is not their priority.”

TRANSCRIPT:

This is Chairman John Zody, bringing you the weekly podcast for the Indiana Democratic Party.

It’s here. Donald Trump and his Congressional Republican allies finally released details on their divisive effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act – and it’s dangerous.

Lovingly dubbed TrumpCare, it’s clear that ensuring Americans and Hoosiers remain covered is not their priority.

Indiana Congressman Luke Messer has become a leading spokesman for Congressional Republicans’ dangerous bill that would cut taxes for the wealthy and insurance company CEOs while putting the care of hundreds of thousands of Hoosiers in jeopardy. Congresswoman Susan Brooks is also center-stage but has yet to reveal whether Indiana’s HIP 2.0 plan – covering 400,000 Hoosiers and providing critical mental health and addiction treatment – would remain in place after 2020.
Republicans too are rushing the bill through the process, in an attempt to ensure passage by April. By comparison, the Affordable Care Act went through nearly nine months of deliberation before it passed. The American people deserve a full, thorough vetting of this bill, and why Republicans are rushing it is up to your interpretation but it certainly seems like they are hiding something.
At the Statehouse, Republican State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jennifer McCormick released an annual update on Indiana’s controversial private school voucher program, but what wasn’t in the report was most eye-catching. McCormick withheld the cost to taxpayers to help pay for students to attend private school, a figure previous reports estimated at more than $53 million.
Governor Holcomb and Statehouse Republicans continue to advocate for working-class Hoosiers to shoulder a higher tax burden to pay for infrastructure improvements. At the same time, Indiana’s corporate tax rate is scheduled to decrease.

And back in DC, just like when the first controversial measure was announced, Congressman André Carson pushed back against President Trump’s second attempt of banning travel from six majority-Muslim countries this week.
United States Senator Joe Donnelly and Congressman Pete Visclosky introduced legislation to designate Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore as a National Park.
Senator Donnelly is also collecting stories on how the Affordable Care Act has positively impacted Hoosier working families. Share yours on his Facebook page by searching “Joe Donnelly for Indiana”.
Finally, I released a statement on International Women’s Day asking Indiana Republicans to join Democrats on measures to ensure Hoosier women earn equal pay for equal work. Statehouse Republicans have blocked previous measures to ensure pay equality for Hoosier women.
Please follow the IDP on Facebook and Twitter. Simply search INDems – that’s I-N-D-E-M-S on Facebook and Twitter, and follow us to get the latest news about our candidates and what we’re doing to hold our counterparts at the Statehouse and in Washington accountable.

Only together can we fight for fairness, the future and work towards a brighter and better state for Hoosiers of all walks of life to succeed in working and raising a family here Indiana.
Thank you for listening.
