TRANSCRIPT:
This is Chairman John Zody, bringing you the weekly podcast for the Indiana Democratic Party.
Governor Holcomb made campaign stops around the state this week, and at every turn, Red for Ed teachers have been there, confronting Holcomb on his empty education promises.
It boils down to respect, and Holcomb continues to say he respects the profession and then acts in a way that undermines public school teachers.
Take teacher pay for example. Holcomb tries to have it both ways, saying he’s working to raise teacher pay, identifying it as a priority while also saying it’s out of his control and a local issue.
Let’s be honest. If it were truly a priority, Holcomb could have found a way to directly raise teachers’ pay – House and Senate Democrats had proposals to do just that. If it’s out of his control and a local issue, then why does the governor continue to try to recognize it as a priority?
Teachers aren’t buying Holcomb’s do-nothing approach to raising their pay or providing the resources they need. If Holcomb really is putting people first, he should stop talking over – and start listening – to public educators.
Under Gov. Holcomb’s watch, Indiana teachers are dead last in salaries. A reality for teachers that causes them to work 2, sometimes 3 jobs or more to put food on the table and provide for their families.
We know that keeping the best educators in the classrooms means not only saying raising teacher pay is a priority but actually putting the dollars and policy experts to work to make it happen.
Hoosier Democrats have provided legislative proposals that get this done for our schools and teachers are behind it. When we work together and call out the hypocrisy of Holcomb and the Statehouse GOP on this issue- we can vote them out.
I’m optimistic of what can happen here in our state in the next year and right now in 2019. We just need everyone to help us get there, including you. You can get involved with the Party at indems.org/join.
