Senator Melton announces run to be Indiana’s next governor
GARY — On Tuesday, State Senator Eddie Melton held an event in Gary, Ind. to inform fellow Hoosiers of his plans regarding the 2020 governor’s race. In June, Senator Melton announced he would engage in conversations across the state of Indiana to explore the needs of our fellow citizens and communities and how he may be of greater service to them through the office of governor. Senator Melton is answering this call to serve and humbly announces his candidacy for governor.
The event kicked off with a prayer from Bishop Sieon Roberts, followed up by remarks from one of Senator Melton’s mentees, Alice Gallegos. Alice, an alumna of a program created by Sen. Melton called InPower Mentoring Program, thanked Sen. Melton for guiding her on a path to both pursue and complete her college degree.
Barbara Hargrov, 4th grade teacher to Sen. Melton, then gave remarks about the potential she saw in him as a young man. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Jennifer McCormick was next to talk about Indiana’s need for new leadership, with a brighter vision for the state. Supt. McCormick joined Sen. Melton on his Hoosier Community Conversations statewide tour this summer, where the main topic of conversation revolved around the state of education in Indiana and how to invest in our future.
Finally, Sen. Melton took the stage to share some of the ideas, challenges and issues he heard from Hoosiers from across the state. After listening to these concerns and hopes for Indiana’s future and deliberating with his family and close friends, Sen. Melton has decided to take this important step of service by seeking the Democratic nomination for governor of Indiana.
“I have heard directly from Hoosiers across Indiana about how they feel left behind by our state government,” Sen. Melton said. “I feel a sense of responsibility to be a voice for those who have felt voiceless and to lead Indiana into a future which creates opportunity for all. I will take the thoughts and dreams shared with me over the years and over the past few months across the state, as I offer myself in service as Indiana’s next governor.”
