Speedway Resident & Military Veteran Pete Cowden Files Candidacy for State Senate District 35
Combat Army veteran and community organizer Pete Cowden filed for candidacy as the Democratic nominee for Indiana State Senate District 35 early Friday afternoon.
Speaking to a crowd on the steps of the Statehouse, Cowden highlighted his background and his motivation to continue serving veterans and hardworking Hoosiers in his district and across the state. “After returning from three combat deployments I was not the same, physically or mentally… I had to be medically retired from the US Army after many injuries… As they processed my retirement for almost 3 years the military told me to wait and put me on a high level of opioid painkillers. Like so many of us in this district, I was angry. I didn’t believe that my sacrifice and hard work mattered. I didn’t think the government gave a damn about me or my family. After waiting for years on medical retirement paperwork, Senator Joe Donnelly stepped in and made the bureaucracy work.”
Cowden continued, “I was finally able to go home to my family and begin to heal. Senator Donnelly’s work showed me that the government could affect our lives not just negatively, but for good as well. His office showed me that the right person in the right position at the right time can alter the course of Hoosiers’ lives for the better.
I may have retired from the military, but I have not retired from service and so today I have filed to be the Democratic candidate for Indiana State Senate District 35.”
