This is the Indiana Democratic Party weekly message for March 28, 2020.

The COVID-19 virus continues to put us in unprecedented territory as we see cases here in Indiana and nationwide increase dramatically.  Our thoughts are with all those who are facing illness – wherever they may live.

This week, it became official that the primary election will be moved from Tuesday, May 5 to Tuesday, June 2. This action came after the Indiana Election Commission met on Wednesday to take formal action to do so, and to also formalize our status for no-fault absentee voting for the primary election. Indiana Democrats continue to believe that voting by mail is the safest and best option, and a number of other provisions were put into place by the Election Commission to encourage vote-by-mail. These include:

  • Allowing any forms that had been in place for the May 5 election to be valid for the June 2 election.
  • Accepting ballot applications submitted after December 2 of last year as no-fault if they had otherwise been rejected.
  • Increasing the way ballots are managed and who can service on a traveling voting board,
  • Expanding the definition of “family member” and caregiver when it comes to helping someone who is confined to vote.

These steps and more are designed to keep Hoosiers safer for the June 2 election – because as you know, we may still be dealing with COVID-19’s impacts even at that time.

Discussions on the best way to operate for the June 2 election are ongoing, and stay tuned for any further updates…but in the meantime, be sure to keep these four dates in your head:

  • Monday, May 4 is the new voter registration deadline.
  • Tuesday, May 5 is when early voting begins
  • Thursday, May 21 is the deadline to submit your application for vote-by-mail
  • Tuesday, June 2 is Election Day.

We encourage everyone to share this information far and wide so that as many Hoosiers as possible have the information they need to vote. And we also give our thanks to all those who are helping those in need in communities across Indiana.

Please stay safe and healthy this week, and thank you for listening.
